The story of
The origins of the Serra carpentry date back to the 1930s, founded by Egisto Serra, born in Ottange in France on 23/07/1912, where his parents had moved from Castrocaro Terme in Emilia Romagna to run an self-owned hotel and to exploit mines for lithoid material extraction.
Egisto Serra , called by all "Gisto", returned to Italy from France with the arrival of the First World War. As a boy he was a blacksmith apprentice , doing wrought iron works, a carpenter and a barber, a profession that he followed for several years in Milan;in those years he had the good fortune to meet a pastor who taught him and from whom he learned important technical and creative notions.
He arrived in Pedemonte in the early thirties of the last century where he initially opened a barber shop, both for men and women, which allowed him to know and attend influential families of the time, knowledge that were then decisive in the choice to undertake the future carpenter activity.
In the same years he met his beloved wife Gioria Angela, daughter of Cav. Gioria Giuseppe, who will be a lifelong companion, a great point of reference and accomplice in all his choices.
The passion for carving and working wood, which he had since he was very young, continued in his free time as a barber, a period in which he began to make wooden interior furnishings.
Through the Tagliavacche family of Pedemonte, related to his wife Angela, he met the Arch. Luigi Vietti who, clonsidering the work he created, gave him the opportunity to undertake the carpenter's activity in 1938, commissioning important furnishings, with the construction of the first workshop in Pedemonte.
In those years there was the creation of the self-supporting helical staircase with intertwined balustrade entirely handmade by Egisto for the villa designed in 1939 by the architect Vietti in Cressa, on the hills of Novara, unique piece still recognized today as a true masterpiece of the manual skill of local crafts.
In the ' 40s he met Mr. Vivenza, creator of the house "Il mormorio nel bosco" by Vera Vivenza, an important producer of perfumery articles, with whom he began a relationship that led to the creation of numerous gift items and objects for the home, studied and created entirely by hand by Egisto, with the brand "Creazioni Serra", with sales office in Milan in Corso Porta Vittoria.
The success of the activity undertaken in the production of household objects, alternating with the artisan production of wooden furniture, allowed to enlarge the Pedemonte laboratory, giving work to twenty workers as well as numerous representatives throughout Italy.
In 1947 , a fire completely destroyed the laboratory, at that time with the warehouses were full of goods produced waiting for delivery.
The calamity risked to make the business fail but still was not enough to dissuade Egisto, who, always supported by the complicity and encouragement of his wife Angela, the following year, in 1948, bought a building in the center of Gravellona Toce, via Ripari, and he moved with his wife and children, starting again to produce interior furnishings and household items.
Since the 1960s, the successful activity of manufacturing wooden furniture and doors and windows has been developed with the creation of exhibition stands for trade fairs, both in Italy and abroad, initially for Alberto Giacomini, founder of the company of the same name, and then for numerous other taps companies present in Borgomanero and surroundings.
In 1965 he built, with his sons Elvio and Ovidio, one of the first factories in the industrial area of Gravellona Toce, where he continued to work with passion until the premature death in 1970.
The sons Elvio and Ovidio will follow the work undertaken by their father, with their mother Angela, and will expand where the Serra carpenters are still located.
